I recently aquired a used hp Laser Jet 1160 printer. It prints very light, to the point that its not worth keeping. (But I would like to keep it...its a very nice unit.) I have spent alot of time on the hp site troubleshooting and gone through their possible solutions presented in http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/troubleshootDisplay/?sp4ts.oid=4... with no luck (well, it improved some when I changed DENSITY from 1 to 5, but not significantely). The toolbox said the cartridge (a hp 49A) had 90% of its toner remaining, was installed in 2007, and was used 120 times. So after reading that permfomance may improve with "new" cartridges after 200 uses, I printed 200 sheets filled with B's, using 1/4 of the toner (down to 66%). No improvement. So could the fact that the cartidge is 6 years old and barely used in those six years be the cause of the problem? I'm not too anxious to buy a new cartidge if its not a likely reason for the poor print quality.
